Education as Empowerment: Marcia Wak's Journey,
By Vinlin Yanda
30th September 2024
Marcia Wak, a dedicated student at the
University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), is on the brink of completing her
economics degree at the School of Business and Public Policy. Her educational
journey is fuelled by a strong belief in the transformative power of education,
a value instilled in her by her parents.
Marcia's father, a subsistence farmer from
East Sepik, has always been a staunch advocate for investing in women's and
girls' education. He firmly believes that empowering women through education
can uplift families and communities. “Education is power,” he often says. “It
can take you places, even outside Papua New Guinea.”
In January 2024, Marcia was selected as
one of ten high performing UPNG students to participate in a prestigious
month-long summer school program at the Australian National University (ANU).
This opportunity, facilitated through the ANU-UPNG partnership supported by the
Australian Government, marked a significant milestone in her academic journey.
Upon her return, Marcia's achievements
were recognized when she received the top award in Data Analysis from the
Australian High Commissioner, John Feakes. This accolade not only highlights her
academic prowess but also reinforces the potential of UPNG students on an
international stage.
“The summer school experience has boosted
my confidence, especially in public speaking,” Marcia reflected. “I’ve picked
up valuable tips that will help me prepare for and handle presentations.”
Marcia's journey exemplifies the vital
role of education in breaking barriers and creating opportunities. With the
support of her family and the educational initiatives available to her, she
embodies the belief that with determination and access to education, women can
indeed make a significant impact both locally and globally.
As Marcia prepares to enter the
professional world, she hopes to inspire other young women to pursue their
educational dreams. Her story is a testament to the power of education and the
potential it holds to transform lives and communities for generations to come.
