The PNG Update 2024, Ms. Loretta Dilu, a tutor at the School of Business and Public Policy, presented her research findings on the critical issue of electrical accessibility in urban communities in the 8-mile settlement in Port Moresby. She identified significant challenges related to health, safety, economics, and education due to limited access to electricity.

Ms. Dilu highlighted that the lack of reliable electrical access makes it difficult for children to study at night, adversely affecting their educational outcomes. Her study area includes both formal and informal settlements, complicating land disputes between local residents and the state.

Employing both quantitative and qualitative research methods, Ms. Dilu gathered essential data to support her findings. She pointed out the financial struggles’ families face when attempting to connect electricity to their homes, which not only impacts individual households but also hinders business viability and community development.

To address these socio-economic challenges effectively, Ms. Dilu recommended improvements in government infrastructure and increased community involvement. She emphasized that collaborative efforts are crucial to enhance electrical accessibility and improve the overall well-being of urban communities.
