In the heart of the University of Papua
New Guinea, the School of Business and Public Policy (SBPP) is not just a place
of academic learning; it’s a thriving community where leadership, teamwork, and
ambition come together. At the forefront of this dynamic environment is Steidy
Samson, a dedicated student who has made a significant impact as the captain of
the SBPP Eagles basketball team over the past two years.
Reflecting on his journey, Steidy
expresses immense gratitude for the trust placed in him by the school’s
administration and his peers. “Leading the SBPP Eagles has been one of the most
rewarding experiences of my life,” he shares. “I’ve learned invaluable lessons
and built strong relationships with students from all disciplines.”
Steidy takes pride in representing his
school every time he dons the Eagles’ jersey. “Each match day, I give my all,
knowing that our supporters are behind us, cheering us on,” he says. His
leadership extended beyond the court, as he took the initiative to mentor
younger players, helping them develop their skills and confidence.
One of Steidy's proudest achievements is
establishing the SBPP Eagles Basketball Club in 2023. The name reflects the
school’s commitment to excellence and the hard work of its administration in
striving to stand out among Papua New Guinea’s premier universities. “We
adopted an eagle-like mindset—aiming high and soaring above challenges,” he explains.
In their inaugural year, the Eagles made a
splash, reaching the Grand Finals in two major competitions. Although they
faced setbacks, including a narrow loss to the SOL City Counsels in the Battle
of the Schools Competition, they also celebrated a triumphant victory in the
Unity Sports Basketball Grand Finals. This year, they again faced tough
competition, going up against the PM Lakers from Pacific Adventist University
in another hard-fought Grand Finals match.
Through these experiences, Steidy has
gained not only valuable lessons in leadership and teamwork but also cherished
memories that will stay with him long after he graduates. “These moments have
shaped my university life,” he reflects, “and I am incredibly thankful for the
support of my parents, siblings, teammates, friends, and everyone in the SBPP
community.”
As he prepares to pass the baton to the
next generation of Eagles, Steidy remains optimistic about the future. “I hope
to see more young talents emerge and for the Eagles to continue to soar
higher,” he states.
In closing, Steidy leaves us with a mantra
that encapsulates his approach to life and leadership: “It’s nothing personal;
it’s just business. After all, it’s just a 'Man in Business doing some
BUSINESS.'”
Steidy Samson’s journey serves as an
inspiring reminder of the power of leadership, community, and perseverance,
leaving a legacy at the School of Business and Public Policy.
