UPNG Banking and Finance Students Association Hosts Dynamic Networking Event,

In an exciting convergence of academia and industry, the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) Banking and Finance Students Association held a vibrant networking event at APEC Haus on May 14, 2024. This sixth annual gathering aimed to connect students with leading figures in the banking and finance sector, fostering opportunities and insights.

The event attracted a diverse group of industry leaders, including representatives from Kina Bank, Bank South Pacific, ANZ Bank, NASFUND Contributors Savings & Loan Society Limited, and the PNG National Stock Exchange. Engaging discussions filled the room as these professionals shared their experiences, expectations, and advice with the next generation of finance experts.

Dr. Solomon Awili, Senior Lecturer in Banking and Finance opened the event by expressing his appreciation for the sponsors and industry partners. He presented detailed profiles of fourth-year Banking and Finance students, setting the stage for potential recruitment opportunities ahead of graduation in 2025.

“The Banking and Finance program has been pivotal in shaping the future of the sector,” Dr. Awili emphasized. “With an average of 30 graduates each year, our alumni are making waves both in Papua New Guinea and internationally.”

Outgoing Association president, Miss Jacklyn Urulu, reflected on the success of the event, thanking Kina Bank Limited, the major sponsor, along with the Centre of Excellence in Financial Inclusion and the PNG National Stock Exchange. “Their support has been invaluable in creating this platform for our students,” she stated.

As the event buzzed with energy, students seized the opportunity to network, gain insights, and explore potential internships and job placements. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and ambition, underscoring the importance of building connections in today’s competitive job market.

Looking forward, the Banking and Finance Association is set to be led by newly elected President Shannah Mitte Soro and his executive team. They will take on the exciting   challenge of organizing the 7th Annual Banking and Finance Networking Event in 2025, aiming to make it even more impactful.

This year’s event not only provided students with essential connections and insights but also showcased UPNG’s commitment to empowering the next generation of finance professionals in a rapidly evolving industry. As Marcia Wak, a recent participant, noted, “Events like these are crucial for us to bridge the gap between theory and practice. They inspire us to envision our futures.”

With such initiatives, UPNG continues to pave the way for its students to thrive in the dynamic world of banking and finance.
